The Pre-Med/Health Guide

Are you confused about if you are on the right track? Are you lost and do not know how/where to start? Here is a simple guide to what you need to know as a pre-med student at UCSD. However, this guide should not supplement pre-med advising, which is offered for free by the UCSD Career Center (HealthBeat).

Register as Pre-Med/Health through the UCSD Career Center (HealthBeat)

Registering as a pre-med/health student through HealthBeat will allow to know all the up-to-date resources and opportunities offered by UCSD for pre-med/health students. Within their weekly newsletters, they provide information on community service opportunities, clinical experience, and more.

Get familiar with medical school requirements and pre-requisites

HealthBeat offers great information online regarding medical-school requirements and pre-requisites (this also includes pre- dentistry, pre- optometry, etc.).

3

Review recommended timeline to medical school

Whether you decide to take a gap year or complete your preparation in 4-years, it is essential to plan. However, it is highly recommended to consult a pre-med advisor or your college advisor (with your preferred timeline) to be best prepared. The link below will guide you to two different sample plans, also found on HealthBeat.

MCAT Preparation

Understanding what you need to know and how to study for the MCAT will help you not procrastinate but also lessen your anxiety surrounding the test. As most medical schools require the MCAT, it is recommended to implement studying and taking the MCAT into your timeline.
